By statute, the Connecticut State Employees Retirement Commission appoints up to 25 per diem physicians – in good standing and licensed to practice medicine within the State of Connecticut – to the Medical Examining Board (MEB). There shall be at least one member of the MEB in each of the following specialties: Psychiatry, Occupational Therapy, Pulmonology, Orthopedics, Neurology and Cardiology. A panel composed of members of the MEB conducts hearings on applications for disability retirement, performs medical record(s) review with regard to applications for disability retirement, has the right to compel a member to submit to a medical exam if it so desires and may conduct reexaminations as to continuance of disability. The MEB makes findings regarding eligibility and reports its findings to the Retirement Commission.
