Comptroller Sean Scanlon Applauds Senate Passage Of “Fallen Hero Fund” Bill
Legislation expands Fallen Officer Fund to include all first responders
(HARTFORD, CT) – Comptroller Sean Scanlon today released the following statement upon the Connecticut General Assembly’s Senate passage of Senate Bill 1239: An Act Concerning A Fallen Officer and Firefighter Fund and Providing Health Insurance Coverage to Survivors of a Firefighter Killed in the Line of Duty.
In 2024, Comptroller Scanlon worked to pass legislation creating a “Fallen Officer Fund” administered by his office that would provide $100,000 of immediate support and health insurance for the surviving spouse and children of a Connecticut police officer killed in the line of duty. Tragically, the fund has been used twice in the last twenty months.
Earlier this legislative session, Comptroller Scanlon called for expansion of the legislation to include firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics, renaming it the “Fallen Hero Fund.”
“Connecticut’s first responders put their lives on the line for us each and every day, often without recognition and always without hesitation,” said Comptroller Scanlon. “In the tragic event that a police officer, firefighter, EMT or paramedic loses their life protecting and serving our state, the Fallen Hero Fund will ensure that their loved ones get the immediate support they need and deserve. That is the very least we can do for those who do so much for us, and I am grateful to the Senate for their unanimous passage of the bill.”
