Comptroller Sean Scanlon Statement On Aetna’s Decision To Exit Small Group Market
(HARTFORD, CT) – Comptroller Sean Scanlon released the following statement in response to Aetna’s decision to leave the small group market in Connecticut. This exit, following Cigna’s decision to leave the market last month, marks the fourth carrier to leave in recent years.
“For years, the insurance industry has rejected proposals that would create more choice and competition in the small group market and promised to improve the market on their own. That hasn’t happened. With the number of available small group plans at an all-time low, it’s more important than ever that government and business work together to develop new options that will ensure Connecticut businesses can provide their employees with access to the high-quality, affordable health plans they deserve. With tens of thousands of Connecticut residents about to lose their health insurance, the time to act is now.”
