SUBJECT: | Use of Town Codes |
Agencies must use the appropriate town code when processing payments to municipalities. Please adhere to the following procedures:
The State Accounting Manual (Section 11, Town Coding Table 3.5) contains a listing of town code numbers which represent unique identifiers that have been assigned to towns, cities, boroughs, school districts and other municipal entities. They range from 1 to 999 and are used to classify payments.
Do not use the town's Federal Employer Identification Number. Listed below are valid town code numbers:
001 - 169 | Towns |
201 - 231 | School Districts/Cooperating School Districts |
241 - 253 | Interdistrict committees and regional education service centers |
301 - 377 | Fire Districts |

601 - 611 | Boroughs not consolidated with towns |
701 - 798 | Other (boards, planning agencies, sewer districts, etc.) |
